The Arts: Ngā Toi

Welcome to the Arts department. This is the place for students to develop their skills in the Performing and Visual Arts in a creative and supportive environment where there is a strong emphasis on the individual and their own creative response to the world around them. We welcome students at all levels of experience to join us in the Arts area and continue this process of learning.

Year 9 and Year 10 Courses

The Arts in the Junior School have been designed to allow students to do a full course of four semesters across Years 9 and 10, or pick up any number or combination of semesters as they choose.

The Visual Arts course options are context based, so students may choose to study our Visual Arts options in any order of preference.

Drama classes are designed as multilevel classes based on student interest. 5DRA1 develops the performance and communication skills that all ākonga should have, 5DRA2 is for passionate or more advanced Drama students considering Drama at NCEA level, and 5DRA3 is a course designed for actors, singers and dancers.

Within the Music course options, 5MUS1 and 5MUS2 are performance based.  5MUS and 5MUS4 are music creation based.

5MUS1 focuses on developing basic instrumental and/or vocal skills.
5MUS2 further develops students instrument and/or vocal skills in preparation for the NCEA Level 1 Music performance requirements.
5MUS3 introduces students to the concepts involved in creating, structuring and producing basic music compositions.
5MUS4 further develops students ability to create, structure and produce their own music compositions using a range of contexts and music technologies, in preparation for the NCEA L1 Music course.

It is recommended that students who intend to follow through with any of the Arts in Year 11 would have studied a minimum of two semesters over two years in the Junior School.
