Year 09/10 5MUS2 – Performance Music 2: We are the Champions
Course Option Description

This course is designed for students who already have a strong base of performance and theory skills. Year 9 students who wish to access this course need to meet with Mrs Price prior to enrolling. On completion of this course students will have the performance skills needed for L1 NCEA Music.
Main areas of study:
The main focus is on further developing instrumental and/or vocal skills to prepare students for performance at the senior level. The emphasis is on increasing technique and confidence through solo and group performance and students will focus on instruments of their choice. They will be encouraged to involve themselves in events such as Rockquest, Big Break, Central Soundwaves and other opportunities as they arise. There will be a Music Night at the end of the semester to showcase students’ skills.
In this course you will further develop:
- performance skills in both solo and group activities. The class work will be complemented through access to specific instrumental tuition out of class.
- confidence and creativity through a range of performance situations. Opportunities for involvement school and external events. You will also be encouraged to plan your own performance opportunities.
- understanding of music theory.
- knowledge of musical elements and features, including of the music language.
- critical understanding of different genres through listening and performing.
- use of technology to enhance your performance work
This course also incorporates the Akonga Profile in the following ways:
- Developing artistic knowledge and skills
- Developing capabilities of self-management, collaboration and creativity, communication, critical thinking, metacognition.
- Building confidence, self-awareness, empathy and a sense of wellbeing.
Methods of assessment:
We assess using the four strands that are outlined in the NZ Curriculum; Practical Knowledge, Communicating and Interpreting, Developing Ideas and Understanding in Context.
This course leads to:
Level 1 Music (6MUS) which, in conjunction with 5MUS3 and/or 5MUS4, provides the skills and background needed for success in the senior level. Students will be expected to have completed at least two semesters of Music over Year 9/10 to enter the NCEA courses.
