Year 09/10 5MPA2 – Exploring Te Ao Haka - Māori Performing Arts

Available for study in:
Year 9 or 10. This course is designed for students who have completed one semester of Te Ao Haka - Māori Performing Arts at Wakatipu High School or at the HoLA’s discretion (where there is prior knowledge).
Main areas of study:
Māori Language - NZ Curriculum Level 3 to 4.
This performance-based course is designed to build upon previously learnt material for students to strengthen their understanding of Māori Performing Arts. Students participating in this course would be keen to break down and learn more about the actions, language, stories, and tikanga weaved into various waiata and haka. There would also be a strong focus on performing waiata and haka.
The course encourages students to embrace and connect to the Māori identity, culture, and language.
In this course you will learn:
- How to comprehend and speak te reo Māori more effectively.
- Waiata with the introduction of accompanying movements and poi.
- The origin, history, importance and different types of haka, as well as the stories that go with them.
- Basic principles of Mau Rākau.
- Connections between elements of traditional Māori dance with other cultures in the Pacific.
- To perform a variety of waiata and haka.
- Narratives, historical events, and people associated with the composition, style, and performance of waiata and haka.
- To identify the unique tikanga and reo features of Te Ao Haka, and begin to use them in practice.

Google Classroom will be used regularly as well as interactive resources such as Education Perfect to extend your learning.
Methods of assessment:
Observation and performance as well as written, oral, listening and reading comprehension are assessed in this course.
This course leads to:
Level 1 Te Ao Haka - Māori Performing Arts (6MPA) and/or Level 1 te reo Māori (6MAO) (TIC Māori's discretion).
Prerequisites
This course is designed for students who have completed at least one semester of Māori Performing Arts - Te Ao Haka at Wakatipu High School or at HoLA’s discretion.
