7PHX

Year 12 7PHX – Physics (NCEA L2)

Course Option Description

Head of Learning Area (HOLA): Mr J. Gilbert.

Why this course:
A wide range of further courses and career pathways such as: architecture, dentistry, surveying, photography, geology, veterinary, meteorology, aviation, medicine, laboratory work, electrician, engineering to name a few, require people with a background in physics. Apart from these areas that require physics, it also answers the ‘how does it work?’ for everyday things from microwaves to seat-belts. Physics graduates are widely sought after in professions as diverse as engineering and accounting due to the subject combining numeracy skills with problem solving.

Course information:
Prior knowledge gained from a satisfactory understanding of the Level 1 Science course is assumed. The main topics are mechanics (including laws of motion and analysis of a systems using vectors), waves (including the behaviour of light, sound and other wave phenomena), electricity (including DC circuit behaviour and electromagnetism) and modern physics (including discoveries leading to structural models of the atom and radioactivity).

This course leads to:
Level 3 Physics (8PHX).

Prerequisites

To achieve entry into this course, students need to pass their Level 1 Science class (15 credits) or by approval by the Teacher in Charge of Physics and HoLA Science (Ms Murray).
