Like 5AENW, 5AENV also offers the opportunity for students to have a say in their learning. The core text for this course is a film and you will explore complementary written and visual texts. You will also develop your oral communication skills and present a speech.
Year 10 English courses are designed by teachers with you in mind. At the start of the semester, you will be presented with a range of themed courses that draw on teacher strengths and specialisations.We encourage you to consider the factors that have the most significant positive impact on your learning and to choose your course accordingly. You’ll then write a letter explaining why your preferred course is the best option, and we will place students accordingly (you will also need to state a second choice).
In this course you will learn:
- About problem-solving and critical thinking under pressure.
- To closely view a film.
- To understand more complex written texts.
- To write an academic essay about a studied film.
- To make connections between texts.
- To carry out a systematic inquiry into a topic of interest.
- Information literacy skills such as detecting bias, note-taking, summarising, synthesising information into a report.
- To communicate ideas in an oral presentation (or a debate).
- To write confidently in a variety of forms.
- To develop personal responses and engagement with a range of texts.
- To foster a joy for reading.

Oral presentation, report writing, essay writing, exam
For students with a passion for varied literature there will also be the option of a 5AENL1 Literature course. Selection is subject to teacher and HoLA approval.
