5AENW

Year 10 5AENW – English (written) (compulsory)

Course Option Description

Head of Learning Area (HOLA): Mr C. Jack.

Main areas of study:

The purpose of 5AENW is to inspire a love for literature, improve literacy, and cultivate socially responsible individuals who think critically and reflect the multi-cultural tapestry of Aotearoa

The focus in 5AENW is on the engagement with and enjoyment of a wide variety of increasingly complex texts and the development of skills and confidence regarding listening, reading and writing. All aspects of the course encourage enjoyment, breadth and variety. There is a balance between the study of New Zealand literature and the wider heritage of English and World Literature and students gain an understanding of the relevance of ideas and information within the learning context and the world they live in.

5AENW students will develop a sound understanding of purpose and audience and can support their ideas with evidence from a text. Emphasis is placed on foundational writing accuracy skills in order to build literacy and to prepare our students for both the senior school and their literacy co-reqresite exams.

We identify the Treaty of Waitangi as an integral part of our curriculum. We acknowledge te ao Māori as part of our national identity in our teaching and learning practices. Every teacher will incorporate a variety of Māori texts and/ or perspectives in their programmes.

In this course you will learn:

  • To create a visual text that communicates sophisticated ideas.
  • To write in a variety of forms and registers.
  • To develop personal responses and engagement with a range of texts.
