Course Option Description

Why this course:    

Geography is a dynamic subject that takes a contemporary approach to relevant and significant issues for people and environments today and in the future. This course provides students with strong communication and analytical skills, which are highly sought after by both private and public sectors.

Geography at this level allows students to develop skills which enable them to:

  • Research a local geographic issue of their choosing
  • Look at a variety of perspectives on a rapidly changing world
  • Communicate information in a variety of effective ways
  • Think laterally and provided reasoned explanations to a variety of topics
  • Analyse an issue using geographical information systems

Course information:   

This course develops an understanding of how people and the natural environment interact. These aspects are examined in both theoretical and practical terms.

Students will / could explore:

  • Tourism on a local and global scale
  • Human trafficking
  • Sustainable energy
  • Urban planning and sustainability
  • Local geographical issue

Scholarship:

Students with a strong academic background will be offered an opportunity for extension by participating in the scholarship programme outside of their timetabled class. 


Prerequisites

Completion of Level 1 Geography with 10 credits or Level 2 Geography with 10 credits previously OR entry at the discretion of the HoLA.

Equipment and Stationery

There will be field trips (to Mt.Cook) associated with this course. Field trips are focused on primary data collection which is required for internal assessments. The cost associated with these trips will be communicated when they are known.

This course is assessed using Achievement and/or Unit Standards. Please note exact standards are subject to change and individual assessment programmes may be provided in consultation with student and teacher.
