Year 09 5SOC1 – Social Studies (compulsory)

Course Option Description

Available for study in: Compulsory for Year 9 students  - Semester 1

Main areas of study:    

Students will explore the changing landscape of Aoteroa, New Zealand and the world through cultural identity and economic activity. Aspects of this course will include, but are not limited to:

  • Turangawaewae, our identity and culture and how we connect to the world
  • Economic inequalities 

 In this course you will learn:    

  • identify differing perspectives on significant events.
  • make ethical judgements about peoples actions in the past and how they reflect our own attitudes and values in a modern Aotearoa.
  • to inquire into and respond to social issues.

This course provides explicit teaching of literacy - reading for meaning, research, academic writing, source analysis identifying and exploring different perspectives and critical thinking. 

Methods of assessment:    

Multiple choice knowledge assessment and two key skills/processes

  • Academic Writing
  • Source Analysis
