High Performance Sport Support

Course Option Description

Head of Learning Area (HOLA): Ms C. Sibtsen.

Why This Course:

This course is designed to better serve our high achieving and promising senior student-athletes and will support these students to achieve both their academic and sporting goals.

Course Information:

The course will be available to Year 11-13 students and is designed to be very holistic. Key focus areas will include; self-management and organisation (balancing various academic and sporting demands across the year); utilising class time to train both together and individually; wellness and the factors that feed into a healthy well-balanced athlete i.e nutrition, sports psychology and injury prevention.

Academy Southland will provide support materials and guidance for students who will also get access to the local knowledge and expertise available at Axis Sports Medicine as well as other expertise.

Students would also have the ability to utilise the sessions to prioritise academic demands in other subjects and/or train specifically for their individual sports. This course will replace a study line for Year 13 students. This course is predominantly for Year 12 and 13 students, entry to other year levels on a case-by-case basis.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites:

Students will need to be either:

a) formally identified on a regional or national sporting pathway;

b) achieving consistently high results at a regional, South Island or National level (this will vary across sports);

c) missing a substantial amount of school in order to fulfil their sporting commitments.

If you don’t meet this criteria and wish to apply for this course you will need to submit an application to Miss Sibtsen ([email protected]) with your reasoning and supporting evidence.

Assessment Information

The High Performance Sport course does not offer specific standards for assessment. The course is a holistic wrap around of support for our top student-athletes. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or packages can be developed for students who require access to a greater number of credits in order to achieve their academic goals.

The above achievement standards are all practical Physical Education standards that could be offered to students to perform in their chosen sport or physical activity which may support their endorsement goals.
