Course Option Description
Available for study in: Compulsory in Year 9.
Main areas of study:
This course covers the essential strands of the Health and Physical Education curriculum, it aims to develop a range of skills and knowledge required for a healthy and positive lifestyle. Physical Education and Health is about lifestyle and empowerment. It is about making sensible decisions relating to physical activity, exercise and health and an understanding of how the body functions and changes.
The Physical Education programme investigates safety in the outdoors through a three day camp at the Greenstone, the opportunity to experience, enjoy and reflect on a wide variety of activities as well as learning about the process behind learning new skills.
Students will leave Physical Education and Health with tools to enable the development of:
- Personal hauora, influences, consequences, and strategies for how to improve and manage your wellbeing.
- Tolerance.
- Learning about others.
- An understanding of their body movement.
- Constructive attitudes and values.
- Sensitivity and empathy to others.
- Cooperative and interpersonal skills.
- A passion for physical activity.
- Life skills, including respect for self, others and society.
- Being inclusive.
- Taking personal and social responsibility.
- Sexuality education: healthy relationships and keeping ourselves safe.
- Basic kayaking and water skills in preparation for Greenstone Camp.
Learning will take place as the students will engage in play, games, sport and physical activity in diverse and challenging physical and social environments. The goal of Physical Education is to ensure that all students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to lead healthy active lives and embody this sense of physical literacy.
Methods of assessment:
All Health and Physical Education assessments are curriculum based levels and are assessed primarily over Level 4 and 5 of the NZ Curriculum. There are a variety of different assessment modes across the course including; demonstrating skills, evaluating safety risks, and reflective journals.
This course leads to:
Year 9 Sport and Exercise studies (5SES) and Year 10 Health and Physical Education Courses (5AHPE, 5ASES).
